Event Cinema at The Spring Launched with Royal Ballet Performance

Watch a world-class production of a famous Christmas story from the intimate comfort of your favourite theatre.

The Spring’s first ever Event Cinema – The Royal Ballet’s Nutcracker – will give you the best seats in the house without the hassle and expense of travelling to London.

It’s a chance to see one of the best companies in the world perform one of the most famous ballets ever, in Havant, for a fraction of the cost and time it would take to see it at the Royal Opera House in London.

This sumptuous production is the first in a new venture for The Spring.

Sophie Fullerlove, director of The Spring, said: “I was planning on launching the Event Cinema programme at the start of 2019 but when I realised we could screen The Nutcracker I had to go for it.

“It’s a wonderful Christmas story. To be able to bring The Royal Ballet’s version to audiences in Havant to start this programme is amazing.”

Event Cinema allows people in venues across the world to watch live performances from elsewhere. It has all the tension and excitement of a live performance with the addition of great views and close ups of the performers.

It also increases the breadth of The Spring’s programme, said Sophie.

“As a small venue we could never fit in the size and scope of the productions live streaming opens up to our audiences.”

The Nutcracker is a delightful way to experience the enchantment of ballet and is suitable for all members of the family. With music by Tchaikovsky, the ballet features the famous Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies.

Sophie said The Nutcracker performance on December 8th was known as an encore screening. “Because it was a late edition to our programme it won’t be streamed live. It’s recorded, but it means we’re able to show it in the afternoon so families can come together to get in the Christmas spirit.”

Three operas, one ballet and four productions from The National Theatre are planned for next year. Six of these will be live and seen at the same time by millions of people across the globe – the other two are encore screenings. Full details will be released soon, but 15th January, 19th March and April 25th are early dates for your diary.

Thanks to support from Hampshire County Council, The Spring has installed state-of-the-art sound kit and a new cinema screen which makes it an ideal venue for Event Cinema. We’ll be bringing you some behind the scenes - stay tuned…
