Britain’s greatest naval dispatches – as told by those who were there24 November 2014
Author, academic and TV presenter Dr Sam Willis is one of the world’s leading authorities on maritime and naval history. His numerous TV appearances include BBC2’s Operation Grand Canyon, shown in January 2014.
Sam will explain the fascinating story of how, when working in the British Library, he came across an extraordinary collection of letters that had been effectively forgotten about for two centuries. After the death of Napoleon, the Lords of the Admiralty ordered that the original dispatches from seven major fleet battles between 1794 and 1815 should be gathered together and presented to the nation.
The letters were written by admirals, captains, surgeons and boatswains, and provide a wonderfully vivid commentary on the naval engagements they participated in.
Sam’s talk will enable the audience at The Spring to hear the history of battle in the very words of the officers who were there. Tickets are priced at£12.50, and £11.25 for concessions. To book, please contact the Box Office on 023 9247 2700.
