Dr Longitude brought the fun to Havant!12 August 2015
On the 7th and 8th August, The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre was delighted to bringthe travelling theatre show Dr Longitude’s Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie to outdoor spaces across the borough as part of its ‘Beyond the Walls’ outreach programme.
These outdoor performances at Hayling Island Park and Leigh Park Gardens were accompanied by glorious August sunshine and a lot of laughter, as over 1000 local residents visited their local parks for an afternoon of free family entertainment. The show focused on the adventures of Dr Longitude and his rag-tag group of friends, enthralling audiences of all ages who revelled in the wacky sense of fun and silliness.
The Spring’s outreach programme Beyond the Walls aims to make high-quality creative opportunities available to everyone in Havant, by taking work out beyond the walls of its East Street venue and into community spaces and venues. Free outdoor events of this kind are an excellent way of introducing children and families to theatre and the audiences who attended these events were encouraged to make the experience their own by bringing a picnic or hiring a deck chair to see the show and enjoying the other free activities on offer.
Jemma Corbin, The Spring’s Outreach Manager, said:
“This was the first time The Spring has taken work of this scale outdoors and we were delighted to have the opportunity to bring a show as wonderful as Dr Longitude to Havant. This was outdoor theatre at its very best and it’s what Beyond the Walls is all about. Our aim was to make theatre fun and accessible and I think we achieved that - everyone I spoke to had a brilliant time and we’ve had people get in touch to tell us how much they and their families enjoyed these events.”
