OPEN EXHIBITION 2016: DRAWING AND POTTERY
At The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre
56 East Street, Havant, PO9 1BS
Last night saw the grand unveiling of The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre’s Open Exhibition for 2016 by the Centre’s Director Sophie Fullerlove.
The Open Exhibition displays high quality artworks by local and regional artists working in the mediums of drawing and pottery.
Midway through the evening Sophie thanked the audience for coming along and said: “The entries this time were very impressive – there was a huge range of work and it was fascinating to see how our given definition of drawing and pottery had been interpreted”.
The work featured in the final exhibition had been chosen by a panel including Clive Caswell from Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth and Peter Levy who is a local Ceramicist working at Making Space.
On the night Sophie gave three special mentions to the following people:
• Janet Woodward for ‘Continuous Trail’ whose work was described as innovative for its use of PVA glue.
• Textile artist Margaret Marks for ‘Thread Drawing’
• And Harvey Gardner from Chichester for his moving drawing on dementia
The winners in each category were handed a £25 cheque as follows:
Brenda Potter for ‘Dog Butter Dish’ (Pottery) – her work was called “fun, charming and engaging”
Simon Cowper for ‘Old House’ (Drawing)
The panel described Simon’s work as “clean and subtle”. They were impressed that what wasn’t included in the picture was as important as the marks on the paper.
The exhibition continues until Friday 3 June at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre in Havant
