The Spring to become a nightclub - for one night only!

25 April 2016

On 7 May 2016 The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre will undergo a dramatic change as we re-imagine our venue as a nightclub – for one night only.

The evening has been inspired by Paines Plough’s play With A Little Bit of Luck by Sabrina Mahfouz. The play will be presented along with live garage sets, including headliners DJ Luck and MC Neat. Luck and Neat are an internationally renowned act who became famous in 1999 with their chart hit ‘With a Little Bit of Luck’, the track which inspired the play.

The Spring is presenting the night as part of its new Theatre Plus programme, funded by Arts Council England.

Director Sophie Fullerlove explains:
“We want audiences to have really special experiences in our building. As we present a lot of touring theatre much of our programme can be seen elsewhere, so we wanted to do something to make the events here unique.

Theatre Plus is about creating full, immersive experiences for visitors from the moment they arrive. It’s not enough for audiences to just wait in the foyer until the house opens. Theatre experiences should be special and everything we do works towards the live experience.”

With this ambition the With a Little Bit of Luck Club Night at The Spring will see the venue turn its gallery, bar and theatre spaces into a fully-fledged nightclub. The bar is being stocked with new lines, the lighting is being changed and security will be on the door. Live music will be provided in the foyer on arrival by youth music charity Music Fusion, who have been working with young people using the history of garage and grime to create their own tracks.

The Paines Plough play will be presented in the venue’s theatre, in a standing layout so the audience are encouraged to dance throughout. Immediately following the production Portsmouth based DJ Beats and Swing will get the crowd moving before DJ Luck and MC Neat headline.

The evening has been designed to reach new audiences and as Sophie explains:

“Most of the tickets so far have been sold to new audiences for The Spring. People who live locally but have not previously seen our organisation as being something for them. That is a perception we’re trying to break.

I am particularly interested in the role local cultural venues play in developing a strong and positive identity for a town or region. By programming DJ Luck and MC Neat, and other high profile artists throughout the year, we are making people who live in our area feel proud of their home. I can’t tell you the number of times audiences have asked if the acts are ‘real’ or have said they can’t believe high profile artists are coming to our borough. Theatre Plus is an extension of our ambition to put Havant on the map.”

With A Little Bit of Luck Club Night is at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, Havant on Saturday 7 May 2016. The evening starts from 8pm.

Tickets are £10.
