A powerful and contemporary take on a rape trial of 1612. How much has really changed in the last four centuries?
“And there’s blood pouring out of this man’s throat. Because these two women are beheading him - did I not mention that?”
Award-winning Breach Theatre restage the 1612 trial of Agostino Tassi for the rape of baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.
Based on surviving court transcripts, this new play dramatises the seven-month trial that gripped Renaissance Rome. Blending myth, history and contemporary commentary, this is the story of how a woman took revenge through her art to become one of the most successful painters of her generation.
Please note: This production contains nudity, strong language and scenes some viewers may find upsetting. It also contains the use of strobe lighting.
“This is one of the most powerful pieces of theatre I saw in 2018. It is a perfect example of the quality and ferocity of the contemporary theatre we present at The Spring.” Sophie Fullerlove, Director
