Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers set in 1957, tells of a frustrated reporter and a potential Virgin birth in the suburbs of Southeast London. Jean Swinney, a journalist on a local paper, is trapped in a life of duty and disappointment from which there is no likelihood of escape.
