Donegal, the summer of 1936.
Sisters Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Rose, and Chris live as best they can outside the village of Ballybeg. Chris has a son, Michael, who lives with the sisters, as does their elder brother, Jack, a priest recently returned from 25 years of missionary work in Uganda.
But Jack has been profoundly changed by the culture he encountered—and seemingly embraced—during his time away. When Gerry, Michael’s father, reappears, the winds of change begin to stir the sisters’ lives.
Exploring love, family, poverty, relationships, and survival, Brian Friel’s multi-award-winning Dancing at Lughnasa was first staged at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 1990. Now, HumDrum Theatre brings this powerful drama to life once more.
