Book Group: The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng

Thursday 13th March, 7:15pm, £7

Our monthly book group welcomes anyone passionate about literature and who enjoys engaging in discussions about its themes with others who share their enthusiasm.

The House of Doors by Tan Twan Eng was Longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2023. It is set in 1921 when the well-known writer Somerset Maugham is beleaguered by an unhappy marriage, ill-health and financial problems. While struggling to write, a friend offers him an escape to the Straits Settlements of Penang where this man’s wife confides in him secrets of her own, including how she came to know the charismatic revolutionary Dr Sun Yat Sen. And more scandalous still, her connection to an Englishwoman charged with murder in the Kuala Lumpur courts. ‘…a finely accomplished piece of work.’  Sunday Times.

The discussion will be led by Gladys West.
